Only 26% of Latino children have the social-emotional and academic skills to succeed in kindergarten, and only 13% of children who speak Spanish at home are kindergarten ready. Children who are not ready to start school find it difficult to meet or exceed educational standards, as they start school with an initial educational gap that tends to widen as they progress throughout their school years. A key barrier to school readiness is the lack of access to learning opportunities that reflect children’s culture and language.

Our aspiration is to increase school readiness of the most vulnerable Latino children and their parents, to increase the success of children in school. We provide parent-child early education programs to 44% of eligible low-income, Latino children, and parents in Sonoma Valley.
La Luz Center’s Estrellitas Early Childhood Education (ECE) Hub provides parent-child education programs for children aged 0 to 3 years.
The Estrellitas ECE Hub is centered around the La Luz AVANCE parent-child education program. This year-long program equips children with socioemotional and cognitive skills and empowers parents to be their children's first and most important teachers. Parents gain the skills to engage and teach their children, along with leadership skills to advocate for their children's education once they enter school.
Supporting and complementary programs of the Estrellitas ECE Hub include Pasitos (parent-child playgroups), Abriendo Puertas (parent leadership, knowledge, and support systems), and Parent Café (parent support groups).

In Sonoma Valley, an estimated 60% of Latinos earn less than 80% of the State’s median income and over 35% are uninsured. A great portion of the population can't meet their basic needs or are one accident away from having to decide to pay the rent or put food on the table for their family. Under these circumstances, parents are not able to support their children in their education.

By connecting El Verano families to the most appropriate resources, we aim to reduce the number of Latinos with unmet basic needs. Instead of worrying about putting food on the table or paying for medical care, these families can focus on supporting their children in their education.
La Luz Family Resource Center provides services that are critical for families to be able to support their children in their education.
We provide information, referrals, and case management to El Verano parents to address their family and children's immediate human basic needs.
We provide training opportunities and resources to increase the El Verano families' earning potential.
We provide leadership and school-engagement information and opportunities for parents to become more involved in the school and support the education of their children.

In Sonoma Valley, an estimated 35% of Latinos don’t have medical insurance and 60% earn less than 80% of the State’s median income. Moreover, there is deep trauma in the individuals of our community due to the constant stress of living in poverty and the impact of the fires and COVID-19 pandemic.

We seek to increase the health and wellness of the most vulnerable individuals and families in Sonoma Valley.
We engage with the community to provide culturally responsive information and increase awareness of wellness, health, and mental health, and the related available services.
We provide information, referrals, and case management for individuals to obtain access to the appropriate health and mental health services.
Co-locate health services at La Luz Center such as mobile clinics, vaccine clinics, mental health services, and exercise classes.
